Why Entrepreneurs Should Hire a Copywriter (and Stop Doing Everything on Their Own)

I know you’re working it, doing your thing, doing all the things, maybe all by yourself or you’re working with a very small team. So you feel like Joe, who works in a button factory pulling and yanking at all the buttons at once just to make sure the machine runs.. Smoothly? Maybe only sometimes.

Listen I know the pride of doing it all yourself, it just feels natural because that’s how creatives get to where they are, they’re scrappy. We’re scrappy, right? We know how to design the event, plan it, organize the project, and document it.

But here’s the deal, just because you can do it all does not mean you should do it all, my love.

I’ve tried that and let me tell you, it doesn’t work. I’m here today to remind you that you did not go into business on your own to do it all on your own. If you want to move your sales up a notch or even just take the time to sit back and enjoy what you’ve created, hiring help—like a copywriter—can transform your business in ways you may not expect.

Who am I?

As a copywriter and an entrepreneur who has been working freelance for years, I can tell you that doing it all can seem like the only way in the beginning, but it’s not.

Hi, my name is Erin and I’m the writer behind Alphabet Soup Words and I’ve worn all the hats. Read on to learn more about why and how I can help you:)

I know it might feel like there’s no way that you could let somebody else take a reign so that you have less on your plate. You’d feel like that’s too easy. Or the idea of paying for someone else to do a job you probably could just do on your own seems just plain silly billy.

But, besides the obvious benefit of saving you time because you will hardly have to think about content creation or email open rates, blah blah blah, hiring a copywriter can save you from burnout because you will (finally) get to focus on the real meat of your creativity and what gets you going.

You’ll get to do what you love.

Can you imagine? And wasn’t that the point of you starting your business?

Besides the thrill of literally doing what you set out to do all on your own, I’m going to lay out

5 more reasons why you should stop doing all the things all by yourself and hire a copywriter

so you can step into the next, fuller and brighter version of your business.

1. The Myth of the Solo Superhero: Why Doing It All Isn’t Sustainable

As you know, I have been working for myself for over a decade now and doing more than everything on my own was a way of life for a lot of those years. When you’re your own boss and learning to take care of your little business baby, it can feel like time spent away from the business is time wasted.

I was there, I was once teaching classes, making clothing, taking photographs and writing product descriptions all in the same work week. Flash to an image of a machine. I thought I was invincible and that if I was awake, I could and should be producing.

Until I couldn't.

One day my body decided that it just wouldn’t anymore and I ended up with a sore throat from a mysterious virus and struggling to get out of bed for months. I did always end up getting out of bed everyday but I can tell you I wasn’t able to do much. Which meant I had to take a break from a lot of my activities. Which meant I had to take a break from making the amount of money I was used to making.

You do NOT want that to happen, do you?

We have to remember that running a small business and being an entrepreneur means we have to take extra good care of ourselves and our boundaries. Entrepreneurs are at risk of negative health effects In comparison to other working sectors, as they’re exposed to higher stress levels. 1

I tell you this to remind you that there is only so much time in a day. Even though trying to squeeze in one more meeting just before spending the evening trying to do some market research to write a sales funnel seems doable, free time to space out or unwind is like getting your oil changed.

You’ll stop running if you don’t do it.

Taking time for yourself is essential to keep the business running. Trust me, it might feel like you’re a superperson (because creatives are superheroes!) but your creativity is precious and can only take so much grind and sleepless nights. If just losing one night of sleep has a direct effect on one’s ability to read complex sentences and to work through logical reasoning, I don’t want to imagine what a constant strain might create.

Remember, your clients won’t get the power of what you’re offering if what you’re offering is lukewarm and soggy. Save your brain energy and hand the words over to a copywriter so you can keep the good stuff for you and your clients.

2. Copywriting Isn’t Just Writing: It’s a Sales and Persuasion Machine

I know you’re running your brainchild thinking ‘but they’re my clients, I should be out there writing to them directly.’ I love that idea, because you probably have great things to say.

But, I also gotta break it to you : it doesn’t just take sass to write copy, there are techniques and methods of persuasion embedded in copy with the intention of moving readers to take action or to buy.

Copywriting is a specific set of techniques, psychological methods and language tools used to persuade and speak directly to your audience because it’s developed to understand them

Professional copywriting really is a tool that uses strategic language to influence emotion to drive sales and connect to an audience.

Using brand messaging that pushes on the emotional buttons of consumers helps to build deeper connections. Why? Because the consumer/ client/ audience listens to who is speaking to them.

Let’s take the Nike campaign with Colin Kaepernick that read,

“Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

That made you feel something didn’t it? That was a pretty powerful way of connecting with and inspiring others not only because the words drive the ‘Just do it’ phrase even harder, but also because Colin Kaepernick reminds us how to truly show up for what we believe.

That’s what good copywriting can do.

3. Time is Money, and Writing Copy Eats Up A Lot of Both

62% of entrepreneurs feel overwhelmed by the demands of their business, probably because they’re giving all the tasks to themselves. NEWSFLASH: Be a better a boss to you and stop forcing late nights for the sake of being in charge or “saving a dime!” because in the end you’re not saving what you think you are.

It’s actually costing you time + money because if you keep this up you’ll be eating fast food for every meal and then spending half your income on supplements just to keep your energy levels stable.

Yep, true story. It was the worst. 100% don’t recommend.

As I explained in the previous paragraph, copywriting is a specific skill set that takes time to learn and to do. You went into business to do your business - to serve others and to offer your talents to za world! Probably not to learn copywriting. Amirite?

Why are you wasting time in the equivalent of another degree if you could be doing your real work and going to bed before you see the crack of dawn? Do you want to be spending your money on doctor visits and a truckload of vitamins just to keep up? It isn’t worth it.

It’s giving overcooked if you keep this up, my darling.

I don’t want to have to say I warned you.

4. Professional Copy Brings Professional Results (And Saves You Money in the Long Run)

I know that sometimes when you’re out there running everything on your own it can feel really scary to imagine having the time to simply focus on your work. You read, save time by hiring a copywriter! But then think, what'll I do with all that time? Do I deserve it? Who do I think I am?

If someone else is doing the marketing work for you, it can bring up feelings of guilt or imposter syndrome when you actually have the time to get what you need to get done.

But, don’t think of it as indulgence! It’s an intelligent investment. While you may know that 60% of consumers say they have purchased from a brand after receiving marketing mail from them - you’ll probably tell me that’s why you’re committed to a content and copywriting marketing plan. But it’ll probably make you feel much better about hiring a copywriter knowing that content marketing is successful for 74% of business owners who invest in it!

Be smart, baby! Be a pro! Make that money.

5. You’re a Creative, So Let Someone Else Handle the Writing

In a sense, trying to write your own copy is a way of sabotaging your creative efforts to make something really shine.

As I said, it might make you feel a little nervous to have all that time to yourself. You might suddenly realize that you are capable of offering something great. It can be a little scary to take charge and to let someone else take on some of your work because then you’ll finally have the capacity to be the creative genius you are. It’s hard to be a creative master when you’re exhausted by just thinking about the 57 things you need to do in the next hour.

Imagine not having to use your creativity and imagination writing sales emails or blog posts and instead being able to pour your heart into the perfect photo shoot or the most tapped into meal plan.

Ok, again you might even be apprehensive about handing over the keys to a copywriter. Being able to do your thing with freedom might suddenly feel like you’re letting a 7 year old eat 8 bags of sour patch kids and go to the city by themselves. But don’t worry, hiring a copywriter doesn't mean your brand is going to suddenly sound like Brad did the copy, a good copywriter will do everything they can to write in a way that reflects your tone, vibe, and vision.

Conclusion: Ready to Let Go and Watch Your Business Thrive?

So, I hope you’re realizing that you don’t have to do it all. Doing all that writing might drive you insane and I think your business needs you to not do that. In the end, hiring a copywriter will not only save you time and money, you’ll most likely end up making more money because copywriters are trained at marketing and will set out the signals to bring your dream clients directly to you. Seems like a win-win situation to me!
